City Stars Set For International Action

A total of nine Leicester City stars will be representing their nations at senior level this coming international break as qualifying for a number of major tournaments continues.
For Denmark, City ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichel will be hoping to feature in goal for a crucial double header of fixtures against Albania and Portugal in a fascinating Euro 2016 Qualifying Group I.

The Danes currently sit top of the group following a 2-1 win over Armenia, while group favourites Portugal are bottom after a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Albania, who Schmeichel’s side face away on Saturday 11 October.

After that is a home clash against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in Copenhagen – a result in either going a long way towards strengthening the Danes’ position in the group.

Over in Group B there are two call-ups to the Wales squad from the City camp with the inclusion of Andy King and Tom Lawrence for what are two huge games for Chris Coleman’s side.

King is an experienced campaigner with Wales, while new signing Lawrence is awaiting his first cap having been named in the previous squad that went top of the group with a dramatic 2-1 win over Andorra.

A double header of home games against Bosnia and Cyprus now beckon for the side on Friday 10 October and Monday 13 October.

Elsewhere in the 2015 African Cup of Nations Qualifying stakes City have two representatives looking to make their mark with their respective nations.

For Algeria, Riyad Mahrez is again part of the group as they look to build on a 100% start to their Group B campaign.

The Desert Foxes are top of the group with six points having beaten Ethiopia and Mali so far, but they now face back-to-back games away and at home against Malawi on 11 and 15 October respectively.

Over in Group E Jeff Schlupp is away with Ghana, who are level at the top of the table with Uganda on four points after two games. Next up are two games against third placed Guinea.

The first is on 11 October away from home, followed by the return fixture four days later in a game that could be crucial to their progress.

City skipper Wes Morgan is also in action for Jamaica after captaining the side in his last outing. The Reggae Boyz face a long trip to face Japan on Friday 10 October.

Completing the list of players featuring in European Qualifiers is Development Squad striker Simonas Stankevicius, who will be facing home games against Estonia and Slovenia on 9 and 12 October respectively.

Lithuania currently lead Group E after a solid victory over San Marino, with England hot on their heels in second. Stankevicius and co. face the Three Lions in March and October next year.

Also in the Development Squad there is a first call up for striker Harry Panayiotou to the St Kitts and Nevis squad for the Carribean Football Uniton Cup in Haiti, while defender Alie Sesay has been called up to the Sierra Leone squad for the first time for their African Cup on Nations qualifiers against Cameroon - both of which will be played in Cameroon.

At Under-21s level Liam Moore has again been named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for a make-or-break European Qualifier Play-Off against Croatia – starting on Friday 10 October at Molineux – before a return leg four days later.

Local lad and Academy product Ben Chilwell has been selected again for Sean O’Driscoll’s England Under-19s squad for the European Championship Qualifiers.

The youngsters play three times in five days against Belarus, Luxembourg and Belgium – building on an impressive recent outing in City’s Under-21s for the left back.
