The Belgian’s excellent goal set the Foxes on their way to a convincing victory over their East Midlands and promotion rivals, which propelled them seven points clear at the top. 

Burnley and Queens Park Rangers recorded victories at the weekend however, meaning City’s lead was cut to four points, but with Nigel Pearson’s side now on a run of five straight Sky Bet Championship wins, the momentum is certainly with them. 

After the match, a delighted De Laet was in no doubt that the win over Derby was among City’s most impressive, telling Foxes Player: “We’ve got our three points and that’s all we can do. It was one of the best performances we’ve had, especially against a team that was on such a good run. 

“The confidence is sky high and we can’t wait for the next game. 

“We’ve put a statement out there now. It doesn’t matter if you’re one or seven points clear, everybody wants to beat you and be there. The pressure stays the same but we’re happy to play with that pressure.” 

De Laet’s strike was his first in 40 games, but he was more concerned with securing the three points against Steve McClaren’s high flying Rams, which he felt highlighted the group ethic inside the squad. 

He added: “It was not my best foot (for the goal), but when you’re in front of goal and it’s wide open, you’ve just got to hit the target really and I did. 

“It’s great when everyone is on the same wavelength like we were [against Derby]. Some of the performances were magnificent and the results will follow. 

“It really helped us playing on Friday to put pressure on other teams. Now we’ve put a statement out there, because Derby were on a good run and we’ve beaten them comfortably at home.”
