Schlupp Hungry For Games

Youngster Jeff Schlupp says he is enjoying life in his new left-sided role for the Foxes as he prepares for Saturday’s big match with Wigan in the Sky Bet Championship.

The 20-year-old has started City’s last three league fixtures as both a left back and left wing back, and despite bursting onto the scene as an exciting striker, Schlupp is relishing his new position.

With City’s adoption of a new 3-5-2 system, which has been used in several games so far this season, Schlupp has had to adapt to life as a defender quickly. He does admit though that it was something made easier with the help of more experienced members of the squad and coaching staff.

“It is a big change,” Schlupp told Foxes Player. “It’s from one side of the pitch to the other and I’ve really had to work on some of my defending qualities, one-on-ones, and getting tight to the winger.

“I think I’ve done well at adapting to that and I’m just looking forward to playing more games now.

“I spoke to the gaffer about it and Paul Konchesky has helped me out quite a lot actually. Someone of his experience helping me out can only be good.

“I just want to get some games under my belt. It’s looking like it could be left back/left wing back for me in the long term, but I’m just happy playing anywhere to be honest.”

Playing first team football more regularly could be the key for Schlupp in achieving not only his goals with Leicester, but also with Ghana on the international stage.

He made his bow for the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists in 2011, and is eager to add more caps to his collection in the future.

He added: “I played for Ghana last when I was last playing regularly for Leicester, and the main thing that the Ghana manager wants me to do is to play some regular games and then go from there.

“My fitness levels are much higher this year and I’m trying to push forward more often.

“The main thing I need is games, and I want those games here at Leicester. There’s a lot of experience in thee team and it’s all about getting into the first XI.

“Once you’re in there you want to keep your spot and you don’t want to lose it. That’s the most important part.”

Schlupp could well be involved at the weekend against Wigan, and while he is eager to put the defeat to Charlton last time out behind him, he knows that will be a big test against one of the favourites for promotion.

“We all know how strong Wigan are,” Schlupp said. “They’ve just been relegated from the Premier League and have a lot of international players. They’ve got a good team in the Championship, but it’s such a hard league. It should be a good test but we’ll be up and ready for it.

“Against Charlton, they matched our system with a 3-5-2 and they ground the result out, they didn’t outplay us. Even when we went down to ten men we still outplayed them so it was a surprise.

“If you look at some of last season’s games, we’ve outplayed the opposition, but they were able to grind out the result. That has been us this season – without hitting top form we’ve been able to grind out results.”
