Girls Take Centre Stage v Ipswich Town

The Foxes’ npower Championship match against Ipswich Town (Saturday 17 November, 3pm) will provide the platform for the city and county’s growing number of female footballers getting involved in the beautiful game.

Following the recent success of Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics, the ever-growing profile of top female stars such as Rachel Yankey and Kelly Smith, plus the increasing success of the Leicester City Women’s team, interest in women’s football is at an all-time high.

While Nigel Pearson’s side will be looking for another valuable three points in the search of promotion to the Premier League, the day’s events will help to further promote the women’s game across all levels, in partnership with the Leicestershire and Rutland County FA.

On the day we will be joined by another of Team GB’s Olympic football stars, as former Fox and England international Rachel Williams lends her support to the day’s events.

Local teams from across the County will also be playing their part in helping to highlight the many pathways into the women’s game, from grass roots level right through to the aspirational levels achieved by the likes of Rachel Williams and her international counterparts.

The match has already generated massive interest from across the local community with over 300 aspiring young female footballers expected to take part, and with a wide range of activities taking place to support awareness of women’s football, we could possibly also unearth the next female star to grace the women’s game.

Activities taking place on the day include a giant inflatable pitch showcasing skills pre-match, Batak quick-feet game, plus a half-time crossbar challenge featuring players from local clubs.
