King Power Stadium: Venue For Leicester

Leicester City Football Club has submitted an application to Leicester City Council to widen the scope of major events hosted at King Power Stadium.

Proposed amendments to stadium planning permission would provide the city of Leicester with a multi-purpose venue of nationally significant capacity.

In addition to meeting the requirements of a 2015 Rugby World Cup host venue, the new application would permit King Power Stadium to host up to 12 major events per year, including concerts and alternative sports, with a capacity of up to 36,000 for non-sporting events.

If approved, the application would immeasurably strengthen Leicester’s ability to compete as a host for events of major international significance.

As part of its new application, the Club has withdrawn the stadium’s existing planning application, which included permission to host a regular Sunday market. The new application contains no such permission.

Opened in July 2002 as the new home of Leicester City following the Club’s move from the nearby Filbert Street, King Power Stadium has become one of Leicester’s most recognisable locations, regularly hosting crowds of over 30,000 in both the Football League and the Premier League.

The stadium has also hosted alternative sporting events in the last 11 years, including international football, European Cup rugby and, in 2012, a Thai boxing event in a purpose-built facility on the stadium grounds, attended by around 3,000 people.

In May 2013, the stadium was confirmed as a host venue for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, serving as a key asset in the city of Leicester’s bid to bring one of the world’s major sporting events to the region. The stadium will host three of the tournaments pool matches in October 2015.

King Power Stadium was purchased by Leicester City’s owners, the Srivaddhanaprabha family, in March 2013.
