Temperatures soared in Bad Radkersburg, with the mercury nudging 30 degrees Celsius at times during a day that included another double session, with a two-mile bike ride in between.
Following the customary morning ride to training, Nigel Pearson and his backroom staff put the squad to the test with the first 11 v 11 session of pre-season, giving all participating members of the squad to chance to open up in full-pitch conditions for the first time.
With less than five weeks to go until the opening game of the Barclays Premier League season, competition was predictably fierce, giving a glimpse of what can be expected when the summer’s pre-season friendlies get under way at Ilkeston next Tuesday (22 July).
Given the conditions and the need for recovery and rehydration, the players were given an extended rest period in the afternoon before preparing for the evening session, which began with another two miles on the bikes.
It was then back onto the training pitch for the day’s second football session, where Kevin Phillips, who has travelled as a member of Pearson’s backroom team, took his first session with the strikers.
While the likes of David Nugent, Jamie Vardy and Chris Wood would all have counted Phillips as a team-mate last season, there was clearly plenty for the younger members of the group to learn from the former England striker, whose sharpness in front of goal shows no sign of diminishing.
Phillips has not been the only marksman in front of goal during the trip, with Kasper Schmeichel’s sensational bicycle kick from Monday’s session quickly becoming a YouTube phenomenon!
Captured by Foxes Player using our in-goal Go Pro cameras, the Dane’s acrobatic volley has received an incredible response on our social media channels. If you haven’t seen it yet, here it is for your enjoyment!
