Moore: Stake A Claim

The opening game of the Barclays Premier League season is still over four weeks away, but young defender Liam Moore has already got his eyes on the campaign curtain raiser against Everton.
TheFoxes have only been back in pre-season training for eight days and touched down in Austria this week for an intensive week of preparations for their return to the top flight.

Unsurprisingly, there is an added sense of hunger about the squad this summer, as they look to build on their Championship-winning season last term and establish themselves among the world’s elite.

And Moore has seen during the early pre-season sessions that competition for places in the starting XI on Saturday 16 August is already coming into focus for every member of Nigel Pearson’s squad.

“I think all the boys are trying to make their stamp right now and get in the gaffer’s thoughts for the first game of the season,” Liam told from the squad’s training base in Bad Radkersburg.

“It’s still a bit of a while away, but whatever you can do now will help.

“It’s nice to get away together – we’re a tight group, as we showed in the league last year. We’ll have a good laugh together, but it will be really intense this week and we’ll get what we need out of it.”

Liam, 21, was speaking just days after signing a new three-year contract at King Power Stadium – ensuring the future of one of the brightest young talents to have emerged from the City Academy in recent years remains on Filbert Way.

And the England Under-21 international was thrilled to put pen to paper alongside his long-time friend and team-mate Jeff Schlupp, who agreed his own three-year extension last week.

“Jeff’s been my best friend here since he joined the club at 11. Ten years later, it’s nice to sign a three year contract at exactly the same time.

“I’ve been trying to sort my future out for a while now, I’m happy to finally get it done and focus on what will be a massive year in the Premier League.

“It’s probably the best time to sign a new contract right now. Hopefully those three years will be in the Premier League.”
