Foxes Set For Hong Kong Sevens

Leicester City will once again be represented at ‘the world’s best seven-a-side tournament’ with a squad set to jet out to Asia to the Hong Kong Football Club Citibank International Soccer Sevens.

, when a Foxes squad comprised mainly of Under-21s and Under-18s will battle it out for three days in an exciting football format against the likes of Manchester City, Aston Villa, Rangers, Newcastle United and Sunderland.

Last year The Foxes stormed to a 3-2 extra-time victory over Chelsea in the Shield final, while Newcastle bested Aston Villa to take the overall title in the Cup final.

Alongside the main tournament, which has acted as a platform for stars such as Gabriel Agbonlahor, Glen Johnson, David Bentley and Shaun Maloney in the past, there is also a Masters competition set to take place.

The Masters event has seen the likes of Jürgen Klinsmann, John Barnes, Andy Cole and Matt Le Tissier all showcase their skills at the now famous tournament, which will take place at the historic Hong Kong Football Club.

Travelling with City’s youngsters this year will be Academy Director Jon Rudkin, who was delighted for the Club to be involved again this time around, telling LCFC.com: “It’s an extremely well organised seven-a-side tournament held in Hong Kong, which mirrors the format of the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens – another highly acclaimed tournament.

“Everybody is really excited and can’t wait to meet all those people that we met last year, because this is one of the most outstanding tournaments available.

“It’s seven-a-side so it offers a great deal of learning for the players in terms of ball retention and how to manage the game in that format. It’s very exciting, it’s quite tactical and it’s something that we’re delighted to be involved in and invited back to again.

“Our squad this time will be younger with less experience, as last year we had the likes of Martyn Waghorn, Conrad Logan and Liam Moore, who emerged from that to have a very good pre-season.

“It will be predominantly the base of the Under-21s group from this season, which includes a high proportion of the Under-18s.“However the exciting thing is that it will be whole new experience for a lot of the players, and it’s the opportunity to travel and prepare properly, as well as playing on a different continent.”
