Pearson's Delight At Opening Day Point

City boss Nigel Pearson praised his two goalscorers after his side twice battled back to a 2-2 draw against Everton at King Power Stadium on Saturday.
In opening weekend of the Barclays Premier League, City went behind twice courtesy of goals from Aiden McGeady and Steven Naismith in the first half.

But a goal each from debutant Leonardo Ulloa and Chris Wood earned the Foxes a priceless point against Roberto Martinez’s side.

Speaking exclusively to LCFC.com, Pearson said: “I think for Leo coming with the talk about how much he’s cost, he’s valued very much among the group of players. I’m very pleased for him to get off the mark.

“For Woody (Chris Wood) on the back of a week with the amount of speculation surrounding his own personal situation it speaks volumes for the lad that he can come on and having one chance took it very, very well.

“All in all it’s been a good day for both of those two but you keep it in context, it’s about what we’ve done as a team and I think we thoroughly deserved to get something out the game today.”

In their first Premier League game in a decade, Pearson thought the Foxes were unlucky to concede two goals but paid tribute to the Toffees’ ability.

He continued: “I think we deserved something out the game – there was an element of misfortune in both their goals in the sense that Kasper made a great save from the initial melee from the corner but you’ve got to give them credit for the finish – it was a superb finish.

“The second one, again was a deflection in off the bar so I thought we’d done ever so well to respond to the initial goal to come back within a minute or so I think is a testament to the players’ spirit.

“I think for the fans, as well having a full house, them seeing a fully committed display with quality at times against a very good side was good. “We have to build on today’s performance really. There’s been a lot of talk about how difficult the opening fixtures are but if we go into any game with not just the game understanding but their own belief in what we’re about I think we can do very well this year.”

Danny Drinkwater added to City’s injury woes, limping off in the first half before being replaced by Dean Hammond.

Pearson also credited the two central midfielders in their display and added: “What I did think we did in the second half today is show our strength in terms of midfield areas.

“I think Dean Hammond and Andy King today were outstanding in terms of when we went to 4-4-2 we managed to deal with their threat and they can be a very difficult side to deal with when they have an extra man in midfield.

“We’ve gone a year or so without really picking too much up and, if you like, it’s sod’s law that we pick up three injuries in three different games.

“It’s frustrating but we’ll manage as best we can. On top of that Matty James gets a heavy knock on his shin that keeps him out for a couple of weeks.”
