Moore Over The Moon

After scoring his first Leicester City goal in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic, Liam Moore couldn’t hide his delight at completing a boyhood dream in front of his own fans.

Moore powered an unstoppable header past Scott Carson at the far post in the 15th minute to put his side ahead and cap off a fine start to the season for the Academy Graduate.

The 20-year-old centre back is thriving alongside Club captain Wes Morgan in defence, and after helping to secure a clean sheet and victory that takes City into fourth on 13 points, things are looking promising for the youngster.

“I’m a local Leicester lad,” said Moore after scoring his first professional goal. “The first big thing for me was to get on the pitch and the next one was to score and I’m so happy that I’ve done that.

“I think I must have been about six or seven when I came to my first game – it was Sunderland at home when Adi Akinbiyi scored and ripped his shirt off. I’ve been booked a few times this year so I thought I’d better not do that! But I am buzzing.

“Wes took two of the players out of the game [at the corner] because they were keeping such a close eye on him and I managed to sneak in around the back.

“The ball felt like it took an age to come down and it’s mad the amount of things that run through your head in that time. Luckily it’s come off and gone into the top corner.”

Moore’s celebrations were enthusiastic to say the least, but with the likes of Zak Whitbread, Sean St. Ledger and Ignasi Miquel vying for a starting spot, the defender knows he’ll need to maintain this level of performance to stay in the team.

He added: “I didn’t know what to do I won’t lie! I think I ran one way and then the other. There were a few things that I wanted to do if I scored a goal and I got most of them out so I’m buzzing.

“The all-round team and bench is so strong that everyone needs to be on their toes. There are quality defenders, midfielders and strikers all ready to come on. It’s good pressure on the players on the pitch.

“It was a solid performance from the team against Wigan and the first 90 minutes we kept sustained pressure on the opposition and kept the clean sheet. As defenders and as a whole unit we’re happy with that.”
