Barmby Applauds Brilliant Schalke Victory

Played at King Power Stadium, the young Foxes secured a win in their first game of the competition thanks to goals from Joe Dodoo and Tom Hopper, with Barmby setting up the first goal before dropping into left-back in the later stages of the game.
Impressed with Schalke’s ability, Barmby felt the work rate and commitment of the Under-21s proved to be the key to beating the talented German side.
“The lads did brilliant,” he said. “They’re obviously a good side – they moved the ball pretty quick but we scored two good goals to be fair.
“As I came inside I was going to shoot, but I knew it would have been blocked – I saw Harry [Panayiotou] first but I slipped it through and Joe Dodoo finished it.
“They moved the ball a lot quicker in switches of play. All the lads in there will tell you that they’re absolutely shattered.
“I think a lot of people would say my defensive work needed to get better, but as soon as they said it, I relished the challenge. I’ve played there in three games and we’ve got three wins it can’t be bad!”
And the explosive attacker also spoke highly of right-back Danny Simpson, who helped the youngster with his positional play throughout the game.
Barmby added: “He’s obviously an experienced professional. He’s been promoted two or three times with different clubs and played at the highest level, coming through Manchester United as well.
“It’s good playing with players like that - he constantly talks to me throughout the game and it helps so much more.
“With Danny Simpson dropping down he showed a brilliant attitude along with the other lads like Tom Lawrence and Nick Powell. It’s good for the young boys too – they’ve all done well.
“There’s always going to be teething problems with a lot of new lads in there, but I think we’ve got the balance right now.”
