U18s Report: City 1-1 Tottenham

City’s Academy squad continued their Barclays U18 Premier League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Belvoir Drive on Saturday.

A well taken goal from Danny Rowe put the Foxes ahead just after the hour mark but an equaliser from Shayon Harrison denied them a second straight league win.
Fresh off a 2-1 victory over Southampton last Saturday, Jon Rudkin’s side sat eight in the Premier League table going in to the clash.
The visitors had the first effort on goal with seven minutes on the clock as Josh Onomah struck from range – Max Varnham-Smith palming down and collecting well.
Ben Chilwell, who operated at left-back for England Under-19s in their 1-1 draw with Germany earlier this month, then cut through the Tottenham back four but his effort on goal was cleared.
A spell of possession for the London club then saw chances for Harrison, Issmael Azzaoui and Onomah but Varnham-Smith was sharp to deny them on each occasion.
Chilwell had the best opportunity of the half to open the scoring but after carrying the ball from the half way line into the Spurs area, the City captain saw his effort hit the top of the bar just past the half hour mark.
A free kick from midfielder Matty Miles from the right wing then found City’s Connor Anderson but the centre half couldn’t direct his header on target – goalless at the break.
The Foxes started the second half well with Miles hitting a shot from range that crept just past Harry Voss’ upright.
Azzaoui was a constant threat to City’s back four but Varnham-Smith did well to deny the winger twice in quick succession 10 minutes into the second period.
But it was the hosts that took the lead on 68 minutes – a knock down from Keenan King found Rowe who drove at the Spurs defence and fired in from inside the area.
Varnham-Smith then denied Azzaoui again just moments after the opener but a strike from distance by Harrison made it 1-1 on 75 minutes.
Rowe could have won it with an effort five minutes later but after bursting past the two Tottenham centre-halves, the No.10 couldn’t beat Voss who tipped the shot wide.
In what was a hard-fought result for Rudkin’s side, the Under-18s travel to West Bromwich Albion next weekend and will look to put up another defiant display against the Baggies.
