Morgan's Newcastle Assessment

Leicester City skipper Wes Morgan has backed the team to be more clinical after a frustrating 1-0 Barclays Premier League defeat to Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
The Foxes went down to a Gabriel Obertan goal in the second half at St James’ Park – coming courtesy of a swift counter attack following a City corner at the other end.

Nigel Pearson’s side had chances in a closely fought match though. Marc Albrighton hit the post on his first Premier League start for City, while Danny Drinkwater, Matty James and Anthony Knockaert also went close in the closing stages.

And although the skipper couldn’t hide his disappointment at the result, he is backing the team to put things right when they face Swansea City away in Wales at the weekend.

He told Foxes Player: “I thought we were well in the game and we felt we definitely deserved something. We played well enough and I thought we deserved to pick up something – a draw at the least – but it wasn’t to be and it wasn’t our day.

“We had some chances, which is a positive for us. We didn’t convert them, but as long as we’re creating chances and getting into those positions, I’m sure we’re going to score more often than not with the boys that we’ve got.

“But to not keep a clean sheet and for them to score in the manner that they did is not pleasing.

“It’s going to be another tough game [against Swansea next], but one where we’ve got to dust ourselves off and get back to business. We’ve got to start turning our good performances into wins.”

In a tight game, the introduction of David Nugent and Jamie Vardy in the second half looked to have put the Foxes in the driving seat, until the dangerous Obertan broke and fired low into the corner with 20 minutes left.

Morgan added: “Obviously we know they’re (Nugent and Vardy) full of pace, they’re a definite threat and they’ve got an eye for goal. That was what we needed at that time.

“It was a point in the game where we started to turn the screw a bit, put the pressure on and we felt that the goal was going to come, so it’s hard to take when we concede a goal form our corner, they go down the field and punish us.

“We’ve had plenty of chances and I’ve got to say Newcastle stuck in the game, and if you do that you’ve always got a chance of coming away with something.”
