U21 Report: Sunderland 1 Leicester City 0

Leicester City’s Development Squad were denied a crucial point after conceding a late penalty in a 1-0 Barclays U21 Premier League loss to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Monday.

Chances fell to either side throughout the match but the key moment came when Joe Davis pulled back Rees Greenwood’s shirt in the box and Liam Agnew converted the penalty with three minutes to go.
The Foxes went into the clash one position behind the Black Cats with a game in hand and were in search of their first win of the season.
The hosts looked for an opening goal in the early stages, but efforts from Thomas Robson and Agnew failed to trouble City No.1 Adam Smith.
Centre-half Alie Sesay, who earned his first cap for Sierra Leone over the international break, then cleared Charalampos Mavrias’ low drive off the line with 22 minutes on the clock to keep his side in the game.
Former Swansea City striker Danny Graham then received the ball deep in the City box, but couldn’t convert from eight yards midway through the first half, slotting wide of Smith’s upright.
Good work from Jack Barmby down the left flank saw the winger swing a superb ball into the box and found Joe Dodoo, who couldn’t direct his right-footed effort on target – a big chance for Leicester with 43 minutes gone.
One last opportunity for Sunderland before the break fell to Graham, who rose to meet Duncan Watmore’s cross well, but Smith saved comfortably.
Watmore mustered the first opportunity of the second half after cutting in from the right but captain James Pearson dug out the ball in from three yards out.
Steve Beaglehole’s side looked to have taken the lead when Barmby struck from the edge of the box, but the ball was turned wide by Costel Pantimilion on 48 minutes.
Another chance fell to Watmore after collecting a through ball just moments later, but Smith came out well and stood strong with a vital save.
Mavrias and Cabral then had fierce efforts from 18 yards but failed to test the City shot-stopper as the game started to stretch.
Barmby again found Dodoo at the back post on the hour mark as the latter played it into substitute Kris Scott, who couldn’t get a clean connection on the pass as Pantimilion gathered.
Centre-half David Ferguson had the best chance of the game after collecting the ball in the area before hammering a strike onto City’s post on 65 minutes.
A darting run from Callum Elder saw the Australian beat two Sunderland defenders before firing his curling effort wide with 20 minutes to go.
Lithuania international Simonas Stankevicius won the ball deep in the Black Cats’ half minutes later and nearly saw his low cross turned in by Martin Smith, but the substitute’s clearance trickled wide.
Barmby, who looked lively throughout the match, then burst through five minutes from time and carried the ball well before playing it to Stankevicius, but the frontman blazed over with time running out.
The Young Foxes looked to be heading for a deserved point but when Davis tugged Greenwood’s shirt in the box, Sunderland were awarded a penalty which Agnew slotted past Smith to earn his side all three points at the death.
