Interim First Team Manager Craig Shakespeare hailed the importance of back-to-back Premier League wins for the team’s confidence after another 3-1 victory over Hull City at King Power Stadium.

After Sam Clucas had put the Tigers ahead against the run of play, strikes from Christian Fuchs, Riyad Mahrez and a Tom Huddlestone own goal completed an impressive comeback for City to move them five points clear of the drop zone.

It was the same scoreline by which they triumphed over and leaves them brimming with confidence going into an 10-day break before a UEFA Champions League Second Leg against Sevilla on 14 March.

For Shakespeare, he was delighted with the qualities shown by his team en route to three points after what he admitted was a hugely challenging fixture against a Hull side fighting for their lives.

“The challenge that we asked of the players was to put together back-to-back wins,” reflected Shakespeare. “It was a difficult game on Monday night [against Liverpool]. I felt that the emotions might have been taken out of it [against Hull City] but we started really well.

To go 1-0 down in the manner we did on the counter [was tough], but we bounced back from it. We showed great character, great resilience and I’m very pleased for the players.

“I think momentum in football can swing and change during a game and I think that they benefitted from the confidence that they gained in the win the other night. We are in a results business and we needed to get the result to give us the environment to blossom. The win the other night gave them that confidence.

“It was a different game today against Hull than Liverpool and we spoke to the players about that. The character they showed to come from behind was tremendous.

“When you’re losing and down on confidence it can be hard. Am I surprised? No, because I know this squad and what they’re capable of. To put together back-to-back wins is vital for them.”
