Amartey's Ghana Win AFCON Opener

The Leicester City midfielder was utilised at centre-back for the Black Stars at the Stade de Port Gentil with the match ultimately being settled by Andre Ayew’s solitary strike from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute. 

Amartey, making his 11th appearance for Ghana, delivered a typically industrious and combative display for his country, who next face Mali on Saturday 21 January before taking on Egypt four days later. 

The 22-year-old has proven to be a key figure for City this year after winning the Premier League title on his debut campaign with the Foxes towards the end of the 2015/16 season under Claudio Ranieri. 

Amartey’s Club team-mates Islam Slimani and Riyad Mahrez, meanwhile, got off and running with a 2-2 draw against Zimbabwe on Sunday. 

Mahrez scored both goals for the Desert Foxes at the Stade de Franceville with encounters against Tunisia on Thursday 19 January and Senegal on Monday 23 January to look forward to over the coming days.
