Harvey Barnes made an instant impact on loan at MK Dons on Saturday afternoon by scoring on his Football League debut in a 5-3 victory over Northampton Town. 

With the Dons already leading their local rivals 4-2, the 19-year-old midfielder, , scored a fine half-volley to put the match beyond doubt at stadium:mk. 

Managed by former Fox Robbie Neilson, the hosts climbed to 16th in League 1 on the back of this success over Justin Edinburgh’s Cobblers before they travel to Peterborough United next weekend. 

Barnes, who made his first-team debut for City at last month, has enjoyed a fast rise to prominence this season under Steve Beaglehole for the Development Squad.

Speaking after making his league bow from the bench, Barnes told MKDons.com of his 79th minute strike: "It was just instinct, when you get in around that area your first thought has got to be getting a shot on goal. 

"Where the ball landed, I thought I've got to have a dig and it came off. It was a bit of a wait to come on and things are going through your head, about how you can influence the game.
