The Leicester City pair were among the most experienced players on the pitch for the young Lions but the hosts proved too strong for Aidy Boothroyd’s men. Gray, substituted after 58 minutes, was his usual lively self in midfield while Chilwell completed a full 90 minutes during the friendly at left-back.

1899 Hoffenheim attacking midfielder Nadiem Amiri, 20, scored the only goal of the game after 23 minutes for the Germans. England next face Denmark on Monday night at the AutoC Park Randers Stadium with just three months to go until the U21 EURO tournament in Poland.

Andy King, meanwhile, must wait a little while longer to eclipse John O’Neill’s record of making 39 international appearances as a Leicester City player after being an unused substitute for 10-man Wales during their FIFA World Cup Group D qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.

Chris Coleman's men, who had Neil Taylor sent off in the 69th minute, fought out a 0-0 stalemate with their hosts. King will now look to his country's next qualifier, against Serbia on Sunday 11 June, to break a Club record of most international appearances while on the books at City.
