Leicester City’s Development Squad secured a 5-0 victory against Derby County at Belvoir Drive on Friday afternoon to stretch their unbeaten run in Premier League 2 to four matches.
An own goal by Rams captain Farrend Rawson in the first half was followed by a double from Harvey Barnes, a neat effort from Bartosz Kapustka and Layton Ndukwu’s late curler to continue the Foxes’ impressive recent form.
Narrow defeats against Walsall and FC Porto - in the Checkatrade Trophy and Premier League International Cup - had been preceded by successes against Tottenham Hotspur and Reading with this win further propelling Steve Beaglehole’s side up the League table.
City started confidently and they were ahead after just 11 minutes when Connor Wood’s cross from the left channel deflected past Rams goalkeeper Henrich Ravas and into the net via an unfortunate knock off Rawson.
Ravas was kept busy throughout the opening 45 minutes and Leicester could have doubled their advantage when Kapustka, fresh from international duty with Poland, struck the post from 18 yards to keep up the early pressure.
Beaglehole’s side emerged from the break with their tails up and they went two goals ahead after 50 minutes when Barnes galloped through the Derby defence before sliding a smart finish past Ravas to assert City’s dominance on the encounter.
Ndukwu was a menace throughout for the hosts at Belvoir Drive and he rattled the woodwork on the hour-mark with a venomous strike from 25 yards.
City did eventually get their third goal of the afternoon when Kapustka bedazzled two Derby defenders with neat footwork before squeezing it through a packed penalty area to evade Ravas at his near post with 18 minutes still to play.
Leicester’s hard work began to tell in the latter stages as they turned the screw and Ndukwu finally got the goal his performance deserved by linking up well with Barnes before curling it into Derby’s top corner from just inside the area.
With four minutes remaining, Kyron Stabana brought down Barnes in the area and the young midfielder stepped up to lash his spot kick beyond Ravas’ reach to cap a fine afternoon for City.
