Consecutive Top-Flight LCFC Starts Record Intact

Wes Morgan’s run of 88 consecutive Premier League starts for Leicester City came to an end at West Ham United – but there was still a significant gap to bridge to break the Club’s top-flight record.

The Foxes captain has been ever-present during a momentous few years for the Club as they first preserved their Premier League status during the 2014/15 campaign before being crowned champions just 10 months later in May 2016.

After being rested for the trip to West Ham United last weekend, however, Morgan’s streak came to an end. The 33-year-old centre-back had some way to go, though, if he was to match a 53-year-old record held by Richie Norman (pictured, below)

The Newcastle-born left-back made an astonishing 160 successive top-tier starts for City between 1959 and 1964. Norman was also a regular feature in Cup competitions, taking his full tally to 194, including two FA Cup finals.

Norman remained at Filbert Street for almost 10 seasons before leaving for Peterborough United in 1968. Following a short spell at London Road, the enterprising full-back went on to manage at Burton Albion for three years.

Second in the standings comes Mark Wallington (below) with 144 starts between 1974 and 1978. The ex-Foxes goalkeeper continued his streak into the second division when the Club were relegated in 1978 - playing a further 84 matches at a lower level - before making another 66 appearances back in the top tier.

All of which means Wallington, in all competitions, started a mammoth 331 matches in a row for the Club over an eight-year period before leaving for Derby County in 1985, where he remained for the following three seasons.
