Former Leicester City captain Matt Elliott represented the Club at an anniversary event at Wembley last month to mark 50 years of the EFL Cup final being played at the national stadium.

Elliott, who famously scored a brace for the Foxes during the 1999/2000 campaign to defeat Tranmere Rovers 2-1 at the old Wembley, was joined in the capital by the likes of England manager Gareth Southgate, former Chelsea defender Graeme Le Saux and ex-City team-mate Les Ferdinand.

Organised by the Football League and The Times newspaper, stalwarts of winning sides through the years were invited to pose for a commemorative photo on the hallowed turf ahead of this year’s final between Premier League duo Manchester United and Southampton on Sunday 26 February.

Speaking to between catch-ups with former colleagues and adversaries of old, Elliott looked back to a memorable day for both himself and the Blue Army. “Back in the late 80s and through the 90s this was a regular experience to go down the M1 and sample this amazing stadium," he said.

“It was a special day in my career obviously. It’s the only trophy I won in my career. Memories are plentiful of that day. I got two goals and was at fault for Tranmere’s equaliser so I needed to go up the other end. But I got Man of the Match, lifted the trophy and got the medal. It’s a privilege to have been invited on behalf of the Club to look back on that day.”

Meanwhile, John Nagle, head of policy at the EFL, added: “We’re here for a special commemorative photo ahead of the final this year which marks 50 years since the first final here in 1967.

“We’ve got a number of the players and heroes who have made such an important contribution to finals at Wembley with us today. Matt was terrific that day for Leicester and it’s clearly a big day in Leicester’s history.”
