Wes Morgan says his Leicester City team-mates will aim to build on Tuesday’s productive 2-1 pre-season victory over Oxford United, as the Foxes continue preparations for the 2016/17 campaign.

Morgan, who signed a new contract shortly before the fixture at the Kassam Stadium, completed 45 minutes, while all 22 players included in the squad featured in City’s pre-season opener.

It proved to be a valuable test for Claudio Ranieri’s men, who fared well against the newly-promoted League 1 outfit.

Chris Maguire’s early free kick put the hosts in front on 14 minutes, but Demarai Gray and Jeffrey Schlupp were on target for City to wrap up the win.

Speaking to LCFC TV following the victory, Morgan said: “We played well, but the most important thing is the fitness, putting in a good performance, getting back to basics and finding our feet.

“We achieved that and we got a result at the same time, so it’s a good day’s work because it’s always nice to win.

“We went a goal behind and they played well in the first half. We got the equaliser and the second-half team went out and won the game 2-1, but the most important thing is that we’re doing the right things and we’ll build on that in our upcoming games.

“The players are playing and getting their fitness back and the manager is testing different systems to have a look at everyone. It’s important to make sure everyone gets a good look and gets a run out. The main thing was to get some work into our legs.”

Facing some of the biggest sides in Europe is something Morgan and his men are likely to do in City’s debut UEFA Champions League campaign, and their three fixtures in the International Champions Cup will provide some valuable preparation for those games.

First up is a clash with Celtic at Celtic Park on Saturday, and the City skipper revealed his team-mates are looking forward to showing just why they are the champions of England.

Morgan added: “We’re looking forward to it. We’ve got some big games against some big opposition and everyone wants to play. We want to prove how good we can be against some of the best opposition in the world. We can’t wait to get going.

“This is the first game (Oxford) we’ve had and we’ve only been back in for two weeks, so we’ve got a few more weeks to go. Over the coming weeks, we’ll get fitter and fitter and it’s all building up to the new season.”
