After a decade of playing for Austria, Leicester City defender Christian Fuchs announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old left back played a major role for the Foxes in their surge to a sensational Premier League title in 2015/16 and his efforts on the international stage have been no different.

After making his debut for Austria in May 2006 against Croatia, Fuchs went on to make 78 appearances for his nation, scoring once in the process.

Having represented Austria at the Euro 2008 finals, Fuchs was named permanent captain in August 2012 and led his nation to a highly-successful Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

An ever-present in the group stages, Fuchs skippered Austria to nine victories in 10 games to help them top Group G by an impressive eight points.

That saw Austria surge into the top 10 of FIFA’s world rankings going into Euro 2016, where they faced Portugal, Hungary and Iceland in Group F.

Fuchs’ nation opened their Euro 2016 finals campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Hungary, before battling to a goalless draw against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

That meant with a victory from their final game, Austria could qualify for the last-16 of the competition, but a dramatic late goal saw Iceland advance with a 2-1 win – Fuchs’ final appearance in red and white.

Fuchs played in all three group fixtures and ends his international career with Austria as their eighth most capped player of all time.

Congratulations on a fantastic international career with Austria, Christian!
