Leicester City defender Christian Fuchs felt his side simply couldn’t capitalise on their first-half momentum following Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

The Foxes were well aware of Liverpool’s forward strengths and were positive early on, but two goals in the space of 18 minutes from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane put Liverpool into a health 2-0 lead.

A comeback looked on when Jamie Vardy converted Lucas Leiva’s misplaced pass and Robert Huth struck the crossbar with a looping header just before the break.

But further goals from Adam Lallana and Firmino eventually saw Liverpool go on to win the game 4-1, and Fuchs revealed that the outcome of the match could have been much different if they followed up on their performance in the opening stages.

“I think we started the game well in the first couple of minutes,” Fuchs told LCFC TV after the game. “We had some good attacks but when you’re 2-0 down at Anfield, it’s always hard.

“We scored to make it 2-1 then I think we might have changed the game. It was a goal that we needed in the first half to come back, but unfortunately it stayed as one goal and not another one. Still we fought, but Liverpool were the better team.

“We had momentum but we couldn’t capitalise on the header from Huthy (Robert Huth). It’s tough. Liverpool look a very strong team this season. They look confident in possession and they never really gave us a chance to play our game.”

Claudio Ranieri’s men next face Club Brugge in their debut UEFA Champions League fixture on Wednesday – a game Fuchs says his side cannot wait to play.

He added: “It’s a present that we made ourselves from last season and personally I can’t wait to play in the Champions League.

“That’s the good thing about it. We lost against Liverpool, but on Wednesday we’ve got a chance to put everything on the right course again.”
