ICC 2016 – The Tournament Explained

From points to penalties and substitutions to suspensions, it's Lcfc.com's guide to the International Champions Cup format...

Leicester City will be one of 10 European clubs competing in the 2016 International Champions Cup this summer, as the Foxes embark on a transatlantic pre-season tour.
Claudio Ranieri’s Premier League champions kick-off their campaign against Celtic in Glasgow on Saturday 23 July, before heading to Los Angeles to face Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday 30 July. Our involvement in the competition concludes in Stockholm on Wednesday 3 August against Spanish champions Barcelona.
So how will a winner be determined from a pre-season tournament consisting of 10 teams playing three times each? What format will the matches take? How many subs can be used? Lcfc.com has the answers…

MATCH FORMAT
All tournament matches will take the standard 90-minute format (two 45-minute halves with a 15-minute interval), but a ‘winner’ will emerge from every fixture.
For games finishing level after 90 minutes, a victor will be determined by a penalty shootout. Standard rules apply – five penalties per team, whoever scores the most wins. If teams are level after five each, the shootout goes to sudden death.
A win inside 90 minutes wraps up three points. A win on penalties secures two points. A defeat on penalties earns one point. A defeat in 90 minutes returns no points.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Teams are permitted to make up to 11 substitutions per match. A 12th substitution may be allowed at the discretion of the match officials.
Substitutions will be allowed a maximum of three times per match, including any made at half-time.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT
So how can Leicester City win the International Champions Cup? Well the 10 clubs participating in the transatlantic competition will be ranked according to the points earned from their three matches.
WIN IN 90 MINS: 3pts
WIN ON PENALTIES: 2pts
DEFEAT ON PENALTIES: 1pt
DEFEAT IN 90 MINS: 0pts
Teams level on points will be subject to the tournament tie-break procedures, determined as follows:
i) Head to head record
ii) Goal difference
iii) Goals scored
iv) Goals conceded
v) Result against common opponent
vi) Disciplinary record

DISCIPLINE
No cautions or dismissals will carry forward into other competitive matches outside of the tournament. Red cards for violent conduct or serious foul play during ICC 2016 will be carried into the next match played by the Club in ICC 2016 only.

TEAM COLOURS
City will sport all three of the Club’s 2016/17 PUMA kits during the course of the tournament.
The Foxes’ red change strip will be debuted in Glasgow against Celtic, who will be in their traditional green and white hoops.
Leicester return to first-choice blue in LA against PSG, who will be in red.
City’s most-recently unveiled white change strip will get its first outing in Stockholm, where Barcelona will be wearing their famous blue and red.
