Riyad Mahrez earned further recognition for his magnificent displays during the 2015/16 campaign after collecting the CAF African Player of the Year award on Thursday evening.

Up against Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Roma winger Mohamed Salah and Liverpool frontman Sadio Mane, as well as City team-mate Islam Slimani, Mahrez earned a third of the votes cast by representatives of African nations and media experts.

In April, Mahrez was named PFA Player of the Year, before collecting the prestigious BBC African Footballer of the Year award in December, as well as being voted seventh in the Ballon d’Or rankings on the same day.

After collecting his award, Mahrez said: "It's never easy to win a big award like that. I'm very happy to win because obviously it was against two big players.

"What happened last season was amazing, we knew it wasn't going to happen again - and it won't happen again I think.”

City’s No.26 played a role in 28 goals during his side’s 2015/16 Premier League-winning campaign, scoring 17 goals and assisting a further 11.

Mahrez is now away on international duty with Algeria for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, this year hosted in Gabon.
