Match Preview: Cheltenham Town vs. Leicester City

Leicester City’s Development Squad know victory against Cheltenham Town on Tuesday 10 January (7.45pm kick-off) will book a Checkatrade Trophy round three tie with Bradford City.

The Foxes travel to the LCI Rail Stadium after progressing through the group stage courtesy of a 1-0 success against Grimsby Town and a penalty shoot-out victory over Sheffield United before a narrow defeat to Walsall at King Power Stadium.

Steve Beaglehole’s men go into the clash against Cheltenham following the 1-0 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League Cup last Wednesday but will be confident of their chances of seeing their way past the Robins.

With an exciting Premier League 2 encounter with Chelsea on the horizon too, on Friday 12 January, City are now fully back in the swing of things after a prolonged break over the Christmas period.

Speaking to LCFC TV after the Brighton reverse, assistant coach Ben Petty said: “We’re very disappointed. We felt, in the second half, that we were on top.

“We controlled the game. We didn’t create as many clear-cut chances as we would have wished but then we got caught on the counter-attack.

“We’ve stressed that as a major factor to the players. We need to take more care around the final third, the last ball has to be better.

“We’ve got into many good crossing positions, more than Brighton. To get done from our corner on a counter-attack is a real blow.

Cheltenham Town manager Gary Johnson told CTFC.com this week: “Leicester want to win this competition. They’ve got a very big Under-23 squad and, in this competition, they’ve also played some first-team players.

“I think you can expect maybe two or three players we may know. They are competitive and we’ve managed to have a good look at them and they are very organised.

“I know they haven’t scored many goals but they’ve got through the competition. We’ve got to break that down and they have the quality to do that to us.

“The result is important and what you get after that is a bonus.”
