Leicester City captain Wes Morgan felt his side looked a lot more like their old selves, as they registered their first point of the Premier League season against Arsenal on Saturday.
After an opening day defeat at Hull City seven days before, the Foxes looked closer to the side that swept all before them in the Premier League last term on their return to King Power Stadium.
While neither the champions nor last season’s runners-up were able to find a breakthrough in an entertaining game, Morgan says a shutout against one of the league’s most dangerous attacking sides represents a positive outcome from a testing first home outing.
“We wanted to improve on our performance from last week and I think we did that,” Morgan said.
“We showed the grit and determination that we expect of ourselves. We could have won the game, but it’s a good performance and a step in the right direction.”
City had the pick of the few chances that were fashioned in the game, with Jamie Vardy going close, while Danny Drinkwater and substitute Ahmed Musa both saw big penalty shouts waved away.
But Morgan said Arsenal’s defensive resilience following their 4-3 defeat to Liverpool in matchweek one did not come as a surprise.
“Arsenal played well, they were solid at the back, their shape was pretty good and we couldn’t really break them down too much,” he said.
“That’s what you can expect from teams in this league, but it’s a positive performance from us. It’s good to get a clean sheet and a point on the board.
“Everyone dug in – we were winning the first challenges, picking up the second balls and were very positive in our play. Hopefully we can continue with that."
