Danny Drinkwater says he is proud to be part of such an exciting Club, after signing a new five-year deal at Leicester City on Thursday.

Drinkwater’s sterling performances in the centre of midfield were pivotal to City’s stunning Premier League title-winning season.

The former Manchester United man played in 35 of City’s 38 2015/16 Premier League games and revealed he can’t wait to be involved in one of the most exciting seasons in the Club’s history.

Alongside the defence of their Premier League crown is a debut campaign in the UEFA Champions League and Drinkwater is eager for his side to impress in Europe.

“I’m delighted to finally put pen to paper,” Drinkwater told LCFC TV after signing his new deal. "Last year was obviously brilliant. What we achieved as a team was fantastic and I just wanted to make sure that the Club was setting the same tone, if you like.

“The way pre season and the start of the season went – Saturday was very promising – it was just about making the right decision and I’ve done that.

“It felt more like the old Leicester on Saturday and if we can keep putting in performances every week like that then I’m guessing we’re going to be in and around it once again.

“It’s (playing in the Champions League) massive. The group is getting called tomorrow (Thursday) and just to listen to the music as you’re walking out onto the pitch and all the other things that come with the Champions League is huge for the Club. I’m just proud to be part of it.”

Another major factor that helped produce one of the most memorable seasons in the Club’s 132-year history was manager Claudio Ranieri, who for Drinkwater has been exceptional.

Drinkwater continued: “Claudio has been great with me ever since he’s been at the Club. He’s had every bit of confidence in me signing that contract.

“He was a big decision in me signing that contract and he’s helped me ever since he’s been at the Club. We’ve achieved so much, so it was a no-brainer.

“It was important for the Club to make their statement and they have done now. The Club’s definitely moving forward.”

Drinkwater signed for the Foxes from Manchester United in January 2012 and has gone on to become one of the most talented midfielders in the country.

Reflecting fondly on his four-and-a-half year career at King Power Stadium so far, Drinkwater added: “When I joined we were in the Championship and I could see the direction that the Club wanted to move in. For me to be part of the achievements that we’ve made so far is huge for me.

“There’s a few of the lads that have been here since I have and looking back at what happened, the story will be amazing.

I just want to achieve more if that’s possible. I know last year was a bit of a fairy tale for people involved at the Club.

“If we can somehow improve on that, whether it be Champions League qualification and getting through to the semi-finals, then that is something that myself and the Club have never experienced.”
