The Foxes fell to a Kevin Gomis opener after just three minutes in their final Premier League Cup group stage fixture at the Impact Arena but rallied in the second half to rescue a point late on through Alex Pascanu’s header.

City went into the tie knowing they could not reach the last-16 of the competition owing to earlier results but maintained the same resilience and attacking prowess which sealed a on Sunday.

Speaking to at full-time in Nottinghamshire, Petty admitted it was looking like a tough night at one point: “It looked towards the end as though it wasn’t going to happen for us. I thought we played really well tonight.

“We went a goal down early, after the starting the game well, but then we dominated the game. We created a lot of chances but didn’t look clinical enough until the end. Nobody here could say we didn’t deserve the goal.”

Petty says there has been an effort made in training by both himself and manager Steve Beaglehole to make the Under-23s a more potent attacking force and admitted it was pleasing to see that manifest itself on the pitch.

“It’s something Steve works really hard with the players on,” he added, ahead of the trip to face Derby in Premier League 2. “Layton [Ndukwu's] delivery is superb and we just we kept going. To score a last minute goal is great for the lads.

“We were very aggressive as well tonight. We played two diminutive players in midfield who are not blessed physically but they put in a really good shift. We wanted to play aggressively with four up front towards the end and they did really well.

"We were chasing the game and dealing with a slight slope on the pitch. We thought with the pace and flair we had up front, on another night, we could have got three or four.”
