An injury-time effort from Admiral Muskwe saw a Leicester City XI beat The New Saints 2-1 in a pre-season friendly at Belvoir Drive on Tuesday.

After a goalless first half, City went ahead with 49 minutes on the clock, as Chris Marriott turned in Bartosz Kapustka’s dangerous low cross from the left.

TNS responded well and equalised with 16 minutes to play through Adrian Cieslewicz, who rounded off a swift counter attack by curling into the top corner.

But City pressed for a winning goal and their persistence eventually paid off, as Muskwe converted a low cross from the left late on.

Ben Hamer, Ritchie De Laet, Marcin Wasilewski, Liam Moore, Kapustka, Gökhan Inler, Daniel Amartey and Tom Lawrence all started the game, while Matty James came on in the second period, as a total of nine first teamers benefitted from some valuable playing time.

It was the visiting side who first threatened, as Ryan Brobbel sent a low drive towards goal that struck Hamer’s upright on five minutes.

Efforts from Lawrence and Muskwe followed, before Moore headed a corner wide as City continued their search for an opening goal.

Inler sent a drive straight at TNS stopper Paul Harrison shortly after, while at the other end, Marriott curled a 25-yard free kick just past the post.

City’s best opportunity of the first half fell to forward Danny Rowe, but after cutting inside, he saw his placed effort well saved by Harrison.

It took just four minutes of the second half for the Foxes to break the deadlock, and it was a goal crafted by new boy Kapustka.

The Poland international wideman sent a powerful cross into the box that was eventually bundled in at the back post by Marriott.

Second-half substitute James then hammered a long-range drive just past the post shortly after his introduction, while Lawrence saw an effort deflect wide just after the hour mark.

Despite looking more likely to score the second goal of the game after Lawrence sent an effort crashing onto the crossbar, City were breached on 74 minutes after Cieslewicz placed a beautiful effort into the top corner of the net.

But City pressed late on and when Muskwe collected a fine cross in from the left flank, he made no mistakes from inside the box, slotting in past Harrison to make it 2-1 in injury time.
