Jamie Vardy replied to strikes from Pablo Sarabia and Joaquin Correa to keep the Foxes in the two-legged tie, as the game eventually finished 2-1 to the hosts.

That may prove to be a crucial away goal and Schmeichel, who on 15 minutes saved a penalty from Correa, believes City can be proud of their performance at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.

“It was a tough game and a defeat, but we’re in the tie still which was what we were looking for,” Schmeichel told .

“For us, the worst case scenario was to stay in the tie and the best case scenario was to win it. An away goal is massive for us and it gives confidence going into the next leg.

“We knew we were going to come up against a team that were full of momentum from their home form and we knew they would pepper the goal because they are a quality side.

“We blocked when we needed to and we rode our luck at times. I think they had something like 22 shots against us and that’s tough to defend against.

“It’s a different climate to what we’re used to, so it was really tough for the outfield boys that did a lot of running. They put their bodies on the line, so I’m really proud of their performance in the end.”

Schmeichel went on to praise City’s ruthlessness as they snatched a goal via Vardy after soaking up pressure from a highly-talented Sevilla forward line.

“We talked a lot about playing them,” Schmeichel added. “We knew that if we got through their first press then there would be chances to run at them.

“They’re very good at passing. They do lose the ball – it’s rare that they do, but we had to pick and choose our moments and luckily one of them came off.”
