Leicester City’s Under-19s were beaten 2-0 in their first-ever home UEFA Youth League fixture by FC Porto at Loughborough University on Tuesday afternoon.

City looked most likely to take the lead in the first half after Admiral Muskwe’s low strike was turned onto the bar by Porto stopper Diogo Costa.

But the young Foxes fell behind on 69 minutes after Bruno Costa sent a low drive past Max Bramley, who had earlier made some fine stops for City.

As the hosts went in search of an equaliser, Porto struck again with just four minutes to play, as Rui Sousa headed in from inside the box.

The young Foxes started positively in front of the BT Sport cameras, as Layton Ndukwu fizzed a 20-yard free kick just over the bar with just four minutes on the clock.

Porto responded with an effort of their own three minutes later through captain Moreto Cassama, who curled just wide of the mark.

City stopper Bramley was then called into action shortly after, denying striker Sousa with a good low stop.

Muskwe, who netted in the clash with Club Brugge, had Leicester’s best opportunity of the opening period. The frontman latched onto Ndukwu’s pass before seeing his effort turned onto the bar by Porto stopper Diogo Costa with 24 minutes gone.

Bramley then pulled off two fine saves, as he tipped over a Joao Cardoso strike that looked destined for the top corner, before denying the forward for a second time in quick succession.

City began the second period just a brightly as they had the first, and only a smart save from Diogo Costa kept Ndukwu’s placed effort from close range out of the back of the net.

The England youth international came close again just before the hour mark, as he curled a 25-yard free kick just round the post.

The young Foxes introduced winger Elliot Webber with 59 minutes gone and that meant that all 11 City players on the pitch at that point were from Leicestershire – an achievement that speaks volumes of the Academy’s fantastic work.

On 69 minutes, Porto broke the deadlock, as a neat piece of play saw Bruno Costa fire in a low effort to open the scoring.

The young Foxes looked for an equaliser, but despite their efforts, Porto went on to wrap up the win thanks to Sousa’s 86th-minute header.

Muskwe came agonisingly close to netting in injury time, but his strike was brilliantly saved by Diogo Costa.
