Leicester City came back from behind to end 2016 with a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League Cup at Loughborough University on Friday afternoon.

Jeff Schlupp's 22nd minute strike and Raul Uche's late leveller bookended a

City were eager to make amends following the reverse against Everton at the Merseyrail Community Stadium on Monday night and their enthusiasm was evident from the off. They pressed forwards in numbers and hassled their opponents into a host of early mistakes before carving out their first opportunity.

After six minutes, Poland midfielder Bartosz Kapustka played an exquisite through-ball into Kairo Mitchell’s path but the forward’s flick-on was too deep for Schlupp to run onto in the Forest box.

Schlupp was the sharpest tool at City’s disposal in the early exchanges and he was there again to unite with Kapustka on the periphery of the visitors’ area.

Mitchell, though, found his effort deflected wide after picking it up 15 yards out. Yohan Benalouane then went close for Beaglehole’s men at Loughborough with a powerful header from Kaputska’s looping corner but the defender was denied by a smart Jordan Smith save.

The early pressure eventually told in the 22nd minute when another Kaputska corner landed perfectly for Schlupp to arrow it into the Forest net and give City a deserved lead.

But it wasn’t to last long, however, with the guests racing up the other end and levelling the scores courtesy of Nielsen’s header from point blank range.

The Foxes soon found themselves behind, too, when Benalouane was adjudged to have bundled Brereton to the floor in the hosts’ area. The strong Forest striker stepped forward and duly converted from 12 yards, beating Daniel Iversen at his bottom corner.

The visiting goal-scorer was there again to almost make it three after 33 minutes when he ghosted down the right flank and forced Iversen into a brilliant diving save on his left-hand side.

At the other end, Kapustka continued to pose questions of the Forest backline and Smith had to be on his toes to tip his free-kick, from 25 yards, over for a corner.

Beaglehole elected to make a double substitution at the half-time break with Dylan Watts and Connor Wood replacing Benalouane and Josh Knight.

Schlupp, also, moved into a more advanced position as City looked for an equaliser.

It didn’t take long for Uche to join the fray either and the changes were making a real difference for Leicester, who looked more threatening on the counter-attack as the match went on.

With the dangerous Brereton now substituted too, City pushed forwards in numbers and they eventually made it 2-2 with 20 minutes to play with Uche marking his arrival with a glanced header to even the scores.

The hosts pushed for a late winner but Josh Debayo, with a fearsome half-volley from 14 yards, and Barnes, who tried to loop it over Smith from the right wing, were both denied by last-ditch blocks.
