Leicester City’s Development Squad kicked-off their 2016/17 Premier League Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat to West Ham United at Loughborough University on Saturday.

The Foxes started well, as Harvey Barnes sent two efforts wide of the mark inside the opening 30 minutes.

City striker Kairo Mitchell came close with a header shortly after, but it was West Ham who would eventually break the deadlock through forward Marcus Browne.

A second goal arrived for the Hammers 13 minutes later and it was a truly stunning strike. Nomingos Quina collected the ball just inside the City half and sent a chip over Daniel Iversen to wrap up the victory for his side.

Yohan Benalouane notched up another 90 minutes in the fixture, while defender David Domej and striker Raul Uche made their first starts of the 2016/17 campaign.

It was an even affair in the early stages, with Barnes’ curling strike on the quarter-hour mark proving to be the only effort in the opening 15 minutes.

Midfielder Barnes threatened again on the half-hour mark, as he volleyed Josh Debayo’s cross from the left flank just wide.

A minute later, West Ham came close with an effort of their own, with winger Dan Kemp drilling a low strike wide of the target from a tight angle.

Another opportunity for the visitors followed shortly after, but after finding space in the box, Jaanai Gordon lashed his powerful strike over the bar.

A pin-point delivery from Matty Miles then found Mitchell, who couldn’t beat Hammers stopper Nathan Trott with a header from close range just after the break.

An opportunity to open the scoring then fell to Browne, and the striker took his chance, as he flicked in Vashon Neufville’s cross to the front post to make it 1-0 with 10 minutes of the second period gone.

Danny Rowe rose highest to a Barnes cross from the right shortly after, only for Trott to hold onto the forward’s effort on the hour mark.

But as City searched for an equaliser, West Ham doubled their lead. It was a stunning effort from Quina, who sent a 45-yard chip over Iversen to leave the goalkeeper with no chance.

Iversen did brilliantly to turn Browne’s free kick round the post just moments later, while Barnes side-footed Layton Ndukwu’s cross from the left off target late on.

Foxes ‘keeper Iversen was called into action again with four minutes to play, as the Denmark youth international got a hand to substitute Sam Ford’s powerful drive to conclude matters in Loughborough.

Attentions now turn to City's Checkatrade Trophy clash at Grimsby Town on Tuesday 4 October (7.45pm kick-off).
