Leicester City’s Development Squad began their Premier League International Cup campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Wolfsburg at King Power Stadium on Tuesday evening.

It proved to be an even opening period and City were unfortunate not to take the lead themselves after Harvey Barnes' header was ruled out for offside.

But a free kick just three minutes before half-time from Sebsatian Wimmer found Oscar Zawada, who converted from close range to put Wolfsburg 1-0 up.

The German side were ruthless and extended their advantage in the second period thanks to two strikes in the space of five minutes from Anton Donkor, who wrapped up the win for his side.

Wolfsburg carved out two chances early on, with Justin Mobius and Paul Jaeckel each lifting powerful strikes well over the bar from distance.

The Foxes thought they had taken the lead midway through the first period, but after Barnes had converted Josh Knight’s knock-down from a corner, the midfielder was flagged offside.

Frontman Zawada then came close to breaking the deadlock, but after rising well, the Wolfsburg striker couldn’t direct his 30th-minute header on target.

At the other end, Republic of Ireland youth international Dylan Watts sent a strike well over from 30 yards, before Wolfsburg went 1-0 up on 42 minutes.

Wimmer’s powerful free kick from the left of the City box was turned in by Zawada on the line to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage at half-time.

Just five minutes into the second half, Wimmer nodded a corner harmlessly wide, while Donkor side-footed off target at the back post shortly after.

But Donkor made no mistakes with his next effort. The striker burst down the left channel and hammered a powerful shot past Ben Hamer to double Wolfsburg’s advantage before the hour mark.

Just five minutes later, the German outfit went 3-0 up, as Donkor rounded off a swift counter attack for his second of the game.

Forward Danny Rowe came close to pulling one back for the Foxes with just over 15 minutes to play, but his 25-yard free kick flew just over the Wolfsburg bar.

It proved to be a tough test for the Foxes, who will now turn their attentions to Friday evening’s Premier League 2 clash with Chelsea at Aldershot Town.
