Leicester City striker played 70 minutes for England during their 1-0 international friendly defeat to Germany in Dortmund on Wednesday evening.

Gareth Southgate, overseeing his first game as permanent England manager, handed Vardy a start against Joachim Low’s men and watched his side begin positively at the Signal Iduna Park.

They were just inches away from taking the lead when Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana struck the post in the first period.

But City’s No.9, notching up his 15th appearance for the Three Lions, couldn’t prevent his side from losing on an evening that ultimately belonged to Galatasaray striker Lukas Podolski.

Returning to the starting XI for the final time before retiring, the Polish-born forward struck with 21 minutes to play to net his 49th goal for the 2014 World Cup champions.

That proved to be enough for Germany to record a slender 1-0 win against England, who are again in action on Sunday when they host Lithuania at Wembley Stadium in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.
