Vardy: Time To Kick On

Jamie Vardy has hailed the “brilliant” opportunity to put Leicester City’s domestic form to one side ahead of the UEFA Champions League last-16 tie at Sevilla on Wednesday night (7.45pm kick-off).

With the Premier League proving to be infertile ground in recent weeks, the Foxes continue on their journey in European football’s platinum competition with a potentially thrilling clash against Jorge Sampaoli’s men at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.

It is perhaps the grandest platform in the Club’s 133-year history and provides Claudio Ranieri’s side with the prospect of reaching the quarter-finals on their maiden campaign in the Champions League - if they can plot a plot a route past the five-time Europa League winners.

England striker Vardy, however, is under no illusions about the task at hand and says City must take the La Liga title contenders seriously if they are to emerge with a positive result to take back to Leicester City Stadium in the second leg on Tuesday 14 March.

“It’s obviously brilliant for the Club and for the lads,” the 30-year-old told the travelling press pack on Tuesday evening in Seville. “We’re all going to be playing in the game and hopefully we can make it a memorable one. I think if we make sure we put a good performance in then hopefully we can take that into the league and improve the situation there.

“It’s been tough. Things just haven’t clicked this year but if we keep working hard and giving 100 per cent then it will start to change. It’s game where we can just forget about it for one night and make sure we can put in a good performance and kick on.”

Despite City’s remarkable performances during the group stage, Vardy is yet to find the back of the net on the European stage but the former Fleetwood Town striker says he is not concerned by that statistic.

“I’m not really fussed about that,” he added. “I’d much rather we put a good performance in and get the win. As long as someone scores it doesn’t matter. We’ve played better in the Champions League and it’s just not clicked in the Premier League. We need to make sure that improves.

“If the ball comes I’ll be onto it as quick as I can. We know as a squad we need to put the effort in and work hard for each other. You’ll always get criticised. You just have to blank it out and focus on what’s important. The main thing is picking up points and dragging ourselves away from the position we’re in.”
