Nugent Hails Fighting Spirit

Last season’s top scorer David Nugent has praised Leicester City’s resilient performance at King Power Stadium on Sunday to beat Barclays Premier League heavyweights Manchester United.
The Foxes ran out 5-3 winners having been behind 2-0 and 3-1 during the match, which will go down as one of the greatest Leicester City displays in recent memory.

Nugent himself got on the scoresheet in the second half with an emphatically struck penalty to pull the score back to 2-3, but it was the never-say-die attitude of the players to secure the three points that pleased him most.

Speaking exclusively to Foxes Player Nugent said: “I’m delighted; it was a great result and one that no one expected at the start of the game. No one expected it when we when 2-0 and 3-1 down but the spirit in this squad has carried on from last season.

“We’ve still got that winning mentality and nothing gets us down. If we got 3-1 down it’s vital to score quickly to gets ourselves back into the game and we did that twice – Leo [Ulloa] made it 2-1 and I made it 3-2. Then after that we took control.”

The Foxes are making a habit of replying quickly to setbacks in games – having responded within a few minutes against Everton and Arsenal already at home this season, and Sunday was no different.

Nugent added: “We knew we had to get back in the game straight away. At 2-0 down we all said to ourselves that we need one before half time to make it 2-1, go in and let the gaffer says his words.

“We then went from strength-to-strength. I thought the third goal was a bit lucky as it was Di Maria’s shot but Herrera got a touch on it. At 3-1 you think ‘here we go, that’s the Premier League.’ But again the spirit showed by the lads was great. We didn’t give up and we deserved the victory.”

Going into the game all the talk was of the wealth of attacking talent that Louis Van Gaal’s had at his disposal, but it was City’s forward line of Nugent, Leo Ulloa and Man-Of-The-Match Jamie Vardy that stole the show.

“They’ve got a lot of attacking presence going forward but it’s been well documented that they aren’t as strong at the back," said Nugent. "We exploited that with Vards running in behind, Leo holding the ball up and me trying to run off them to get the second ball in the hole.

“We played a totally different formation used the diamond and tried to match them up. It’s worked perfectly and it’s another three points on the table and we’re looking good so far.”
