Marathon Pair Grateful For Support

Ian, City commentator for BBC Radio Leicester, and Richard, a former Club Chaplain, put their bodies on the line in a two-man Leicester City shirt to raise funds for the LCFC Foxes Foundation and Sports Chaplaincy UK on Sunday.

Battling plus-30-degree heat and near-80 per cent humidity, the pair ensured the sponsored shirt made it round the Thai capital’s 26.2-mile course in an outstanding five hours and nine minutes. So extreme were the conditions, that the race itself began at 3am local time, with Ian and Richard crossing the finishing line together shortly after 8am.

Their combined efforts have already raised over £7,000 for the two causes, with donations still coming in upon their return to the UK.

“It was simply the toughest physical test of both our lives,” said Ian, who last season ran the London Marathon in support of the Foundation’s One In A Million campaign.

“The humidity was a killer and a huge challenge for us both, but we managed to get the shirt around the gruelling course. 

“The welcome from the people of Thailand will live with us forever and we must have posed for hundreds of pictures in the giant Foxes top, increasing the awareness of the fundraising for LCFC Foxes Foundation and Sports Chaplaincy UK, while pushing towards £8,000 so far in our fundraising efforts.

“Our shirt and individual sponsors have been incredible and we can’t thank them enough. The money in the banks of our charities was the reason for attempting the 26.2 miles in Bangkok so thank you for your support. 

“Richard and I would also like to thank everyone at Leicester City Football Club for their kind assistance in organising and attending the event. Without the Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive’s backing, we wouldn’t have been able to complete such a challenge together, so thank you to them and all the staff who helped us along the way, we really do appreciate the support from the Football Club.

“The pain in our legs will ease, the work and desire of those involved within the charities will continue and we’re proud to have represented them.”

This season, the LCFC Foxes Foundation will again be raising funds to support worthy causes in the Leicestershire community through the support of Leicester City fans and the people of region.

These causes for the 2012/13 season are set to include The Lord Mayor of Leicester’s Stroke Appeal; The Silver Star Appeal; The Moodie Report Foundation and its support for the Our Space Appeal at Leicester Royal Infirmary; and a Leicester-based children’s charity.

In partnership with the King Power Foundation, the LCFC Foxes Foundation also aims to make a reciprocal commitment to a children’s charity in Bangkok, with the King Power Foundation pledging support to a similar organisation in Leicester.

Full details of the LCFC Foxes Foundation’s 2012/13 campaign will be launched on Saturday 1 December, ahead of Leicester City’s home game against Derby County at King Power Stadium.
