U18s Report: West Brom 2 City 1

Leicester City’s Under-18s were dealt a cruel blow away to West Brom in the Barclays U18 Premier League as the Baggies claimed all three points with a last-gasp winner.

The Foxes enjoyed plenty of possession throughout the match, and could easily have been 2-0 up through chances from Danny Rowe early on, but it was the home side who took the lead.

Samir Nabi struck a looping effort from distance that gave City ‘keeper Liam Sharpe no chance, putting the Baggies 1-0 up going into half time.

The response from City was excellent – pulling a goal back just 35 seconds after the restart and then striking the upright as they went in search of the winning goal.

But unfortunately just two minutes from the end, City’s good work was undone when Ged Oldnall put the ball past Sharpe after hitting the post to seal a 2-1 victory for the Baggies.

Academy Director Jon Rudkin said afterwards: “The boys didn’t feel that we’d converted our possession into enough chances, but we responded quickly by pulling it back to 1-1 and looked the more likely side to win.

“We hit the post and forced several good saves, but if you don’t capitalise on those chances you can get punished right at the death. We were certainly guilty of that and conceded late.

“But overall there were some pleasing performances and a lot of positives to take.”
