Learn How To Save A Life

Leicester City and Leicester Tigers are joining with Heartsafe to host a live CPR demonstration in front of over 50,000 people at King Power Stadium and Welford Road next month.
To launch the event, Club Ambassador Alan ‘The Birch’ Birchenall and Cardiologist at Glenfield Hospital, Dr. Doug Skehan, demonstrated CPR techniques to staff at King Power Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

It’s all building up to the main events at half time of City’s game with Burnley on 4 October, as well as the Tigers’ clash with Harlequins six days later, when supporters are urged to stay in their seats for the demonstrations, which could equip them with the knowledge and confidence to save lives.

Leicester City’s Club Ambassador said: “We’ll be raising awareness by doing the demonstration, and to educate 50,000 people in one weekend will hopefully let us get the message over.

“I know a lot of the fans like to go into the concourses at half time for a beer and a Bovril, but I’m just asking them to stop in their seats for a short while, because maybe one day this could help them save a life.

“After King Power Stadium we’re going down to the Welford Road the following Friday against Harlequins, where they’ll have over 20,000 fans. So we’re trying to get more than 50,000 people to see the demonstration and if one day we manage to save one life from it, then it has been a great result.”

Dr. Skehan added: “I come from a group called the Leicestershire Heartsafe Schools Programme and we are going into UK secondary schools to give training in CPR and defibrillator use.

“We’ve been given a chance by Leicester City and the Leicester Tigers to show some of our training to a wider audience, and hopefully we can get greater awareness of what we’re trying to bring to the schools about CPR and defibrillators.

“We hope that the spectators will have more confidence to respond if they do see someone having a cardiac arrest.”

As part of the LCFC Foxes Foundation funded LCFC Defibrillator Appeal, 20 life-saving defibrillators were purchased in the summer and will be placed in a number of key areas around the county.

Alongside the equipment, awareness and education is also a key part of helping to save lives, so at half time of Leicester City’s Barclays Premier League game against Burnley on 4 October and the Leicester Tigers’ clash with Harlequins on 10 October, there will be an on-pitch demonstration of CPR techniques.

Defibrillators are machines designed to give an electric shock to the heart in order to restore the heart’s natural rhythm after cardiac arrest.

They have saved countless lives, including former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba, whose heart stopped for 78 minutes following cardiac arrest on the pitch at White Hart Lane in March 2012.

Around 12 young people each week die as a result of heart problems, while that number rises to as many as 200 a day with adults – both statistics that emphasise the importance of defibrillators and techniques such as CPR.
