Schmeichel: I'm Claiming It

City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was adamant that he should be credited with his first career goal after he helped keep the Foxes’ unbeaten run intact with a 1-1 draw against Yeovil Town.
With his team trailing 1-0 going into second half stoppage time, the Denmark international ventured forward and powered a header off the crossbar and, as replays suggest, over the line.

The referee didn’t blow for a goal, but thankfully Chris Wood was quickest to react and make absolutely certain that City came away with a point from their 18th league game in a row without defeat.

On Wednesday morning the Football League confirmed that the goal had officially been awarded to Wood, but speaking immediately after the match, Schmeichel told Foxes Player: “I think anyone that has seen the TV replays will see that the ball was over the line.

“It’s a bit dismaying that the linesman didn’t flag for a goal straight away, so it was good that Chris Wood was alive and followed it up, but I’m definitely claiming it!

“I’ll do everything that I possibly can to get it, but it’s a little bit unfortunate because in your career as a goalkeeper, you may only get one chance to score a goal and I’ve sort of half been denied the celebrations.

“I’m just very thankful that the ball did go in in the end and we did get at least a point out of it. “It was a very tough game. Yeovil came here with a game plan and it almost came off for them. They deserve credit for the way they played.”

Assistant boss Craig Shakespeare revealed to media after the match that Schmeichel often joins in with finishing sessions in training, and the goalkeeper confirmed that it’s a part of his game that he does work on.

“I’ve always been a striker!” Joked Schmeichel. “It’s something as goalkeepers, that, if you saw our sessions you’d see that a lot of us are very good with heading crosses. It’s something you don’t expect to ever do, but luckily we got the chance.

“I’ve played outfield a lot in my life and I haven’t done it so much recently in training, but in my younger years I played outfield a lot.

“At previous clubs where I’ve been on the bench I’ve been the spare ‘keeper and sometimes you play outfield to stay in touch with it and sometimes it pays off. I think I’m a decent enough footballer to join in, but obviously there’s a reason that I’m in goal, which hopefully shows.

“I enjoy playing outfield and I think being able to play is a very important pat of goalkeeping.”
