Waggy: Togetherness Is Driving Us

Martyn Waghorn reckons the Leicester City squad has been galvanised by criticism aimed their way early in the season.

And the Foxes forward says it is the feeling of togetherness that is the driving force behind the recent form that has seen City surge to the top of the npower Championship.

Questions were asked of Leicester’s promotion credentials when they suffered three defeats in four league games around the turn of last month, despite producing some promising performances.

But Nigel Pearson’s side have roared back since with an unbeaten run of six wins in seven games and head into Saturday’s visit of Crystal Palace as npower Championship leaders.

“I put it down to the team spirit,” Waggy said in the build-up to Saturday’s game, where the Foxes will be aiming for a seventh successive home win.

“Anyone that has been around the Club will know that we’ve got a good set of lads here that want to play for each other and bond well together. There’s a mixture of young and old, we all get on great and when you step onto the field you feel like you’re together.

“There have been some tough games, we had some criticism at the start of the season, but we’ve handled it well. There have been a few great performances in games that we have lost, but we have bounced back well.

“We got a draw against Birmingham after creating a lot of chances and a good result against Brighton the other night, so hopefully we can take that into Palace on Saturday.”

Waghorn has had to be patient while waiting for his opportunity this season, regularly featuring for City’s Under-21 side until recently breaking into the first team while Jamie Vardy recovered from illness.

But having missed a large proportion of last season through a niggling hamstring injury, the 22-year-old forward, who has started the last two games, has been pleased to be back involved as quickly as he has.

“I’m in a good place right now,” he said.

“It’s been a while getting into the team and last season I had that injury that kept me out for so long, but it’s been good to get back in.

“The boys have been flying so it was unfortunate for Vards that he was ill when he was – the boys had been playing so well that I didn’t expect the opportunity come along as quickly as it did.

“I haven’t managed to get my first goal of the season yet, but I’m sure that will come and the boys have been playing well, so I can’t complain.”

The search for goals has been a frustrating one so far for Waghorn, whose prolific form for the Under-21s this term has not been converted to the first team in the last two games.

But the popular Geordie takes a typically optimistic view to his form in front of goal and, if selected, will be plugging away as he always does against the Eagles on Saturday.

“It would be nice to get that first goal, hopefully it’ll come Saturday, but you know what I’m like, I’ll keep trying and give it 100 per cent in every game,” he said.

“I always think the next chance will go in. It hasn’t yet but I don’t mind that. I’m not one of these players that has ever been prolific. I’d love to be, but I’m not and I know that if I don’t score there are players like David Nugent or Andy King that will.

“As long as the team wins, I don’t mind, but I’m confident the goals will come if I keep getting the chances.”
