Pearson: Continue The Upward Trend

City manager Nigel Pearson says the trust that exists between his players will be crucial in the npower Championship’s automatic promotion race.

The Foxes host Wolverhampton Wanderers at King Power Stadium on Thursday night (kick-off 7.45pm), looking for a fifth straight league win that would put significant pressure on their promotion rivals ahead of the weekend.

Pearson’s team have emerged as genuine top-two contenders in recent weeks, are unbeaten in seven games and have conceded just one league goal since Christmas.

And the Foxes boss is convinced that recent results have been a consequence of the application and closeness his players have displayed throughout the campaign.

“I think the players have applied themselves well all season, even in our more difficult spells they have gone about their work in the right way,” Pearson said ahead of Thursday night’s game.

“They enjoy each other’s company, they’re a professional group and certainly getting the right results will help their confidence.

“There’s a lot of trust within the group, which will stand us in good stead, but we have to make sure we continue in our upward trend in terms of results.

“For us, Thursday is another opportunity to get ahead of our opponents. If we get the right result, we can put pressure on the teams around us.”

The visit of Wolves will be an interesting challenge for Pearson’s troops, against a side that appear to be underachieving this season.

Relegated from the Premier League last May, Dean Saunders’ side sit 18th in the table, despite having experienced campaigners such as defender Roger Johnson, midfielders Karl Henry and Jamie O’Hara and strike duo Kevin Doyle and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake at their disposal.

“We know they have some good players, but we have to make sure our performance is right,” Pearson said.

“We can’t spend too much time concerning ourselves with the opposition and their status, but we’re aware of the players they have.

“We know what to expect from them and, as most Championship games are, it will be a good test for us.”
