Danny Simpson Joins Leicester City
Leicester City Football Club is delighted to announce that an agreement has been reached with Queens Park Rangers for the transfer of defender Danny Simpson.
Danny, 27, has agreed personal terms, completed a medical and signed a contract at King Power Stadium that runs to June 2017.
The former Manchester United and Newcastle United full back becomes City's second new signing in three days, following the arrival of Argentine midfielder Esteban Cambiasso on Thursday.
He has been issued with the No17 shirt and will be at King Power Stadium for Sunday's Barclays Premier League fixture against Arsenal, though ineligible to feature in the matchday squad.
Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson said: "I'm really pleased that we have been able to secure a defender of Danny's quality. He will add more good competition to our squad, which is very healthy for the group.
"He already knows a number of our players from his time with Manchester United and he is the kind of character we look for, so I'm sure he will settle in quickly."
After completing the deal, Danny told Foxes Player: “I’m really excited. I’ve had a look around the facilities, which look fantastic, and had a good chat with the manager, who I’m really looking forward to working with.
“He told me that there’s a good group of players here that demand a lot of each other and I think, from speaking to other people, he knows I’ll work hard every day to fit into that. I’ve got a really good feeling about this.”
Danny joins Leicester after just over a year at Loftus Road. He made 34 league appearances for QPR last season, as the west London club won promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs. He featured in both matches against Leicester during the campaign, captaining Rangers on their visit to King Power Stadium in April.
A graduate of the same United academy that developed the talents of Danny Drinkwater, Matty James and Ritchie De Laet, Simpson made seven first-team appearances for the Red Devils before leaving the club in 2010.
Having harnessed his skills as a tenacious, fleet-footed right back while on loan with Royal Antwerp, Sunderland, Ipswich Town and Blackburn Rovers, Danny's latest loan move, at Newcastle, led to a permanent transfer in January 2010 and he helped the recently relegated Magpies secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
He made over 100 league appearances during three and a half years in the North East, before joining QPR last summer.
Subject to his registration being confirmed by the Premier League, Danny should be in contention for his Foxes debut when Leicester travel to Stoke City on Saturday 13 September, following the forthcoming international break.
