Fighting Spirit Pleases Rudkin

Leicester City Academy director Jon Rudkin praised the spirit of his side after they came back from a goal down to beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 on Saturday.

The victory marked their second consecutive win on the road as goals from Keenan King and Cedric Kipre sealed the points to move them up to fifth in the Barclays U18 Premier League.
The Foxes fell behind to a deflected shot just before half time despite having the opportunity to take the lead from the spot – City missing and allowing Albion into the game.
But two goals in 10 minutes put Leicester in front and they returned home with another three points to add to their productive start to the season.
Speaking after the victory, Rudkin said: “We welcomed back Brandon Fox who had been away with the England Under-18s in Italy. It also meant that Cedric Kipre came in at centre half.
“We made a couple of changes from the previous game with Ben Chilwell unavailable after making the step up to the Under-21s.
“It was a pleasing start to the game – the type of fast start we were looking for – and we created some very good chances.
“Danny Rose was brought down in the area and we were given a penalty but unfortunately for the second time this season we didn’t convert.
“Although that didn’t seem to have any effect as we created an number of other chances for Brandon Fox, Keenan King and one from a corner for Darnell Johnson.
"Always at this level you have to make sure you try and get our noses in front but unfortunately we fell behind just before half time to a deflected shot.”
But again showing fighting spirit against a powerful and talented opposition, City rallied and despite trailing at the break, were upbeat about their first half display.
Rudkin continued: “We obviously went in 1-0 down and while a little bit disappointed with the half time score line, the performance, seen in a lot of our players’ faces, seemed to be very pleasing.
“In the second half we managed to convert our good play into some goals.
“Our first goal came through Keenan King, a really well taken goal which saw ourselves draw level.
“That then followed up 10 minutes later from a volley from the edge of the box by Cedric Kipre.
“We could have seen ourselves go further ahead but it’s always a tough encounter against West Bromwich Albion – they’re always physically strong.
“We weathered it in the last 10 minutes when a lot of long balls came into the box but it was great how we handled that late in the second half.”
“Overall It was a pleasing performance and a further three valuable points for the side.”
The young Foxes next travel to Reading on Saturday and hope to maintain their unbeaten away record having drawn once and won twice on the road.
