City Stars Help Launch Schools Project

Leicester City duo Riyad Mahrez and Zoumana Bakayogo gave youngsters at Uplands Infant School a day to remember last week as they helped to launch the Barclays Premier League Schools Project.
The initiative sees the Club work with boy Key Stage 1 and 2 children in 30 schools across the county in an effort to teach them fundamental movement skills, agility, balance and co-ordination.

Alongside this work in PE lessons, the LCFC Community Trust will also offer after school football clubs, which it is hoped will widen the talent pool and give those gifted youngsters a chance to progress along the LCFC Player Pathway.

LCFC Trust Community Director Mick King said: “This initiative helps to engage pupils in PE and encourages them to enjoy exercise and the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.

“The success of the Club and the first team players serves to inspire young people to participate in sport. Having Riyad and Zoumana attend the session at Uplands Infant School provided a great role models for the pupils to emulate.”

The Trust’s Sports Participation Officer, Matt Willcock added: “The programme is an excellent way to build physical confidence and to promote positive attitudes towards exercise and PE.

“It was fantastic for us to see the faces of the kids when the players showed up. They were good enough to join in with the kids too. This age group are just getting into sport so at this age range (4-6) it’s really important that they practice the fundamental movements.”

Speaking after the event, Riyad Mahrez said: “I really enjoy these things. It’s important for us and important for the children too. I really enjoyed playing with and talking with the children.”

Zoumana Bakayogo added: “I know that I’m a role model for these kids and I have to set a good example. When they think about Leicester City they think about the players so we have a responsibility to set a good example.”
