Wood: Boys Are Buzzing

City’s New Zealand international striker Chris Wood was thrilled to be back among the goals after his spectacular strike against Burnley helped fire the Foxes six points clear at the top.
A stunning half volley in the second half sealed a 2-0 win to make it two in two for the 22-year-old from the bench, and with Jamie Vardy picking up a suspected injury at the weekend, he will be fighting it out with Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Kevin Phillips for a starting spot.
The win now puts City within seven points of a return to the Premier League, but with a trip to Wigan Athletic on the cards on Tuesday night to contend with, there is still plenty of work left to do.
However, with the unbeaten run now standing at 19 games, the mood in the camp is understandably positive. Wood revealed: “Confidence is high. The boys are buzzing. We’re a tight bunch and we fight for each other.
You can see that in the dressing room. “It was a massive win for the fans [against Burnley]. It was a top of the table clash and we proved that we can be the best side in the league. The lads played brilliantly and it was great to come away with the three points. “It’s definitely not [job done in the league].
We still need points to make it mathematically certain so we need to push on on Tuesday against Wigan and get a good result.” Wood entered the fray as a first half substitute – setting up David Nugent’s opener before scoring the second - and he was delighted to do a job for the team, but hopes that his team-mate won’t be out for too long.
He added: “It was just one of those things. Vards (Jamie Vardy) felt a twinge in his groin and you don’t want to risk a big player like that. We’ve got a lot of big games to come so we’re going to need him come the end of the season.
“You don’t expect to get on so early, but it was nice to get on and get some extended game time. “I didn’t really do much [for the opening goal], I just gave it to Nuge (David Nugent) and he did the hard work. He took it around a couple of players and bent it into the bottom corner, so he did brilliantly and should take all the credit for the goal.
“For mine, it was one of those that sat up nicely and I thought ‘what the heck? Why not give it a go.’ Luckily it went in. “I try when I come on in games to assert my presence and get into the game that way - to get involved and get stuck into it. That’s what I had to do. I gave the guy a little nudge, the ball fell nicely and before I knew it the ball was in the back of the net.”
