Adjustment Always Difficult For Pearson

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson believes all three newly-promoted sides have found the adjustment from the Championship to the Barclays Premier League a particularly difficult task.

The Foxes, Burnley and Saturday’s opponents Queens Park Rangers currently occupy the three bottom league positions, but just four points separate City and 12th-placed Liverpool.
Highlighting a decrease in chances and an increase in the opposition’s defensive ability as the main factors for his side’s battle to find the back of the net in recent games, Pearson said his men have worked hard to get into the position they are now in, and won’t be fazed by the pressures of England’s top flight.
He said: “It’s never easy to make that adjustment from being a side that’s used to winning games and the expectation surrounding that.
“They are different types of pressure. It is always pressure in the sense that if you’re winning games then the expectation is there for you to do well as it has been for us for the last decade, trying to get out of the Championship into the Premier League – that itself can be a burden of pressure.
“When you’re not doing well and not winning games it’s a different type of pressure. I think it has been a difficult adjustment. Let’s not kid ourselves – players are always under pressure to perform as are managers to get results.
“The players remain in very good spirits and I have no qualms about the fact that they will improve our form, and that’s the most important thing. It’s not about losing faith or confidence in anybody who has got us into the Premier League in the first place.
“The margins are very small and we’ve not always found the answers but I think all three sides that have been promoted have found it difficult to make that adjustment. We are where we are at the moment but we are capable of improving. We’re looking forward rather than too much behind.”
Knowing the ability of his squad, Pearson continues to set a high standard for his players to meet throughout what has been a tough group of fixtures over the last few weeks.
“We’ve got high expectations of ourselves,” Pearson added. “You’re always under some sort of pressure and whether that’s a positive or negative one, you’ve got to deal with it.
“Really, that’s how I approach it and how we continue to work through a difficult period. I was very encouraged by the performance [against Sunderland] but we have to turn positive performances into wins and that’s clear. There will be many other clubs who will be looking at it in a very similar situation.
“We’ve been aspiring to be involved in the Premier League for some time so I don’t see any reason not to embrace pressure.”
